Nationwide Strike Grips Greece: 24 Hours of Transport Paralysis
A nationwide strike in Greece has brought the country's transport networks to a standstill, affecting railways, ferries, buses, taxis, and more
Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has said he will file a libel suit against private TV channel TV7, after the latter published information alleging that Plevneliev purchases a luxury estate in Greece.
"I will give an example to Bulgarian citizens how a person can, abiding by the rule of law defend his or her rights against lies and manipulations," said Plevneliev Tuesday.
The Bulgarian President stressed that he has been declaring his house in Greece in his tax returns ever since he acquired it in 2007, but rejected TV7's suggestions that there are murky features in the deal.
The TV7 report claimed Plevneliev, who was then an enterpreneur, paid for the house, located at the Halkidiki Peninsula, EUR 0.7 M in cash, whereas the tax evaluation of the estate was only EUR 0.23 M.
According to the Bulgarian President, the payment had been via a bank transfer, and all relevant details are transparent.
In its report, TV7 insinuated that Plevneliev might have made the alleged move in order to more easily move funds out of Bulgaria, and/ or to evade taxes.
Later Tuesday, the channel said it has at its disposal what it said is the notary public document for the sale of the estate.
