Putin and Biden Begin Talks in Expanded Format
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden have begun to hold talks in an expanded format.
The Syrian National Council (SNC) has rejected participation in the proposed peace negotiations in Geneva.
The country’s largest opposition coalition group believes current circumstances do not allow for such talks to be held, reports the BBC.
George Sabra, leader of the SNC, criticized the international community for failing to punish the Syrian government for its use of chemical weapons during an attack on civilians in August. He does not think the time is right for holding peace talks, when hundreds of innocent citizens are being killed every day.
At the end of September, the UN Security Council passed a resolution for the destruction of Syria’s chemical arsenal. This came after weeks of political stalemate over the chemical attack, where the United States were considering air strikes on Bashar Al-Assad’s regime, but Russia and China were firmly against military intervention.
The Syrian government has agreed to take part in the peace talks, expected to start in the middle of November.
More than 100,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Assad began in March 2011, according to the UN.
