Bulgaria Backs Russia’s Return to UEFA: Controversy Ahead of 2026 Vote

European football’s governing body UEFA has placed six Bulgarian League games on its list for suspected match fixing.
The officials have signaled the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) for assistance in the investigation, reports the daily Trud.
UEFA has prioritized the fight on corruption and match fixing in recent years. Among its tactics are to monitor suspicious betting patterns on matches and report to the respective football federations to initiate prosecution.
Due to the confidentiality of the reports, the matches or teams involved remain undisclosed. The BFU did, however, reveal that it does not concern any of the league’s top 5 sides.
If incriminated, teams or individual players face tough sanctions. That was the fate of Ukranian Metalist Kharkiv and Turkish teams Fenerbahce and Besiktas, who were all banned from participating in European competitions this season.
