European Commissioner on humanitarian aid and crisis response Kristalina Georgieva concluded that Bulgaria is in need of extra funds for dealing with the refugee crisis.

Georgieva visited refugee shelters in Sofia and surrounding areas, as well as the Bulgarian Red Cross headquarters.

"The care for refugees is a responsibility of all states who have signed the UN Refugee Convention. Bulgaria has received EUR 15 M from the Commission, of which EUR 2.6 M for refugees. This sum is not enough", specified Georgieva.

The Euro-commissioner revealed that experts have been sent out to Bulgaria, Malta, and Greece in the beginning of the week to conduct assessment and draft recommendations.

Bugaria's capacity for sheltering refugees is currently exceeded by 397 places, as tens of new asylum seekers cross the borders each day.

On Wednesday, the head of the Bulgarian State Agency for Refugees was dismissed for mismanagement of the crisis.
