Iran's new President Hassan Rouhani had to confront several dozen of Islamist opposers upon coming back from his trip to New York to take part in the UN General Assembly.

Protesters even threw eggs and shoes at Iran's President, who had to be sheltered by security officers escorting him to his car, reports RIA Novosti.

However, Rouhani's supporters - some 200-300 shouting "Rouhani, we thank you!" - were present at the Tehran international airport in significantly larger numbers.

Opposers were infuriated with a phone conversation that the Iranian President carried out with US counterpart Barack Obama, in which the two underscored their commitment to resolving the issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program via diplomatic means.

In his address to the UN General Assembly, Rouhani firmly stated that creating nuclear weapons is against the principles of the Islamic Republic, and that Iran desires complete transparency regarding its nuclear program.

He also issued a message of peace to the American people, spoken in English, and branded the Holocaust as a crime to be abhorred.

Since assuming office as Iran's President in August 3, Hassan Rouhani, a moderate Islamic cleric and academic, has led a policy of opening up to Western countries.
