The lowest EU funds per capita for the next 2014-2020 programming period have been allotted to Bulgaria, the bloc’s poorest member, according to European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn.

Speaking in an interview to Bulgarian National Television (BNT), the European Commissioner stated that Bulgaria receives the lowest funding among the countries in Central and East Europe as grants are given on the grounds of specific projects prepared and economic development rate.

Bulgaria will receive EUR 970 per capita, while Romania gets EUr 1016 p.c., a Polish national EUR 1880, Hungarian EUR 2055.

The EU commissioner is paying  an official visit to Bulgaria meeting key politicians to discuss on EU funds that Bulgaria has absorbed during the last programming period.

“Until now Bulgaria has absorbed over 35 % of the funds, which is not the worst result comparing it to the other European countries”, Hahn remarked, adding that future talks will emphasize on improving the cooperation between the ministries and the end-beneficiaries of the grants.

Regarding the updates Bulgaria should do to benefit the most from the allotted funds, the EU politician said the country should prepare an overall strategy encompassing the separate policy sectors.

“The overall positive effect on Bulgaria should be made clear when choosing and preparing each separate project” the commissioner pointed out.
