A magnitude 5.3 earthquake on the Richter scale has been registered in Japan's Fukushima prefecture in the early hours of Friday.

The earthquake's epicenter was 20km off the Pacific coast of Iwaki with a depth of 22km, reports The Japan Times daily. The tremor was also felt in the capital Tokyo, 175km south.

The Japan Meteorological Agency assured that no threats of a tsunami were present. The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant has not been affected further by the quake.

On Thursday, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe toured the nuclear plant, which was devastated by the powerful earthquake and tsunami in March, 2011. He ordered the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) to fix the radioactive leaks, which have been the cause of much concern in recent months.
