Regardless of political twists, partnership relations between Bulgaria and the US are developing steadily, said Bulgarian Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin, who is on a working visit to Washington DC.
He further noted the contacts between the two countries were rooted in the period before the establishment of formal diplomatic relations.
During the first day of the visit, Vigenin held talks with Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), Deputy Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Wendy Sherman Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, and Paul W. Jones, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, the Foreign Ministry Press Office informs.
The 110-th anniversary of establishing formal diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the US was marked at a ceremony and lunch in the Library of Congress.
Bulgaria's top diplomat reminded of the huge contribution of US journalist Janarius Aloysius McGahan with his coverage of the April 1876 uprising against the Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, and of the role of prominent Bulgarians in US. He also underscored the potential in the large number of Bulgarians living in the US for further development of bilateral relations in all areas.
During the talks, the Minister has once again raised the issue with lifting the US visa regime for Bulgarian citizens on grounds it would lead to a further advancement of bilateral relations in economy, educations, science and culture.
The talks also revolved around the situation in Syria, US investments in Bulgaria, the use of the joint military training ground in Novo Selo to train Libyan soldiers, and the situation on the Balkans.
