Bulgarian citizens Gabriela Sashova (26) and Krasimir Georgiev (34), who have garnered widespread outrage for their alleged involvement in animal abuse
A man who stirred outrage in Bulgaria by brutally killing his dog earlier this year has received an eleven-month suspended sentence with a three-year probation period.
The Asenovgrad district court also ruled that the man, 55-year-old Raycho Ivanov, should pay a BGN 1000 fine.
On June 7, Ivanov killed his dog by dragging it behind his car.
Ivanov was charged with grave hooliganism and with killing an animal in a particularly cruel manner. He faced a sentence of up to five years on the first count and up to three years on the second.
However, the court took into account the defendant’s remorse.
Ivanov said he committed the shocking action because the dog attacked him and his grandchild. He told the court that he was sorry for what he did.
Over 125 000 people have signed an international petition calling for an effective sentence in Ivanov’s case, the Bulgarian National Radio has informed.
The sentence may be appealed with the Plovdiv Court of Appeal.
