Bulgaria cannot and should not participate in military intervention in Syria, particularly without a decision of the UN Security Council, according to Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin.

Speaking before TV7 Tuesday morning, Vigenin stressed that even with a "green light" from the UN, Bulgaria must approach the issue very sensibly, knowing its potential and what it could do to help.

He reiterated earlier statements that the closure of the Bulgarian-Turkish border over fears of a refugee wave from Syria would be an extreme measure, which should be undertaken only if and when the situation becomes out of control.

He promised all refugees entering the country will be checked and accounted for and further pledged to hold talks with Turkey to urge the southern neighbor to increase border control as well.

In the light of the latest developments with Syria stating it was ready to place its chemical weapons stockpile under international control, Bulgaria's top diplomat voiced cautious optimism the conflict could be resolved politically, without a military strike.
