Bulgarian underdogs Botev Plovdiv fought hard but failed to upset Germany’s VfB Stuttgart in the third qualifying round of UEFA Europa League.

Stuttgart rode their luck to advance to the final qualifying round, thanks to an away-goal success over Botev following their 0-0 home draw in the return leg.

The best chances fell to the two-time Bulgarian champions on Thursday, who had the hosts on the ropes for much of the first half, Bundesliga.com has noted.

A second-half revival validated VfB's progress, although the lack of a goal, and some defensive mishaps, will be of concern to coach Bruno Labbadia, despite his side’s passage.
