Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s planned visit to the Gaza Strip has beencanceled by Egyptian authorities, according to reports.
The visit, originally scheduled for several months ago, was postponed several times due to the unrest in Egypt, but last week Erdogan was informed by Cairo that he could not visit at all, according to Arutz Sheva.
A message on social network Twitter by Ibrahim Kal?n, chief advisor to Erdogan, said that the visit was canceled to the “prolonged crisis” in Egypt. However, sources in Egypt said that the reason Erdogan was not welcome was concern over his Islamist positions and his affinity for the Muslim Brotherhood.
The Turkish premier was highly critical of what he viewed as the West’s passive response in allowing the Egyptian army to take down a democratically elected government.
The Jerusalem Times has reminded that Erdogan accused Western and Arab nations of "double standards" for failing to condemn the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi, whose Muslim Brotherhood like Erdogan has Islamist roots.
