Socialist MP and Deputy Parliament Chair Maya Manolova has assured that the ad-hoc committee tasked with drafting a new Election Code will work during the summer recess from August 5 to August 31.

"We will formulate all proposals and they will hopefully be approved by the committee by October, after which the parties represented in Parliament will have a say," said Manolova, Chair of the ad-hoc committee, at a Thursday sitting of the panel, according to reports of the BGNES news agency.

"After that, the Election Code will pass first and second reading in Parliament," she added.

Responding to criticism of civic organizations that the MPs had not given up their summer recess, she stressed that "writing laws is a highly responsible job and we keep doing a lot."

"August will not be a vacation month for us, I do not know what information you have but our workday lasts no less than 12 hours, Saturdays and Sundays included, judging from my own experience," she stated.

As regards complaints about the failure of other parliamentary committees to invite citizens to their sittings, she vowed that she would take steps to remedy the problem.

Manolova also concluded that "there is a psychological barrier to adopting the measure immediately, but the good news is that the process towards civic participation is irreversible."

A new Election Code is among the demands of thousands of anti-government protesters, who have been gathering for 49 days in Sofia to call on the Cabinet of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski to resign over a series of controversial high-level appointments and ties with oligarchs.
