Bulgarian farmers will be able to apply for funding of up to CHF 6500 for creating products of their own brand, according to Ivaylo Yotov, head of the Lovech-based District Directorate of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).

A total of CHF 65 000 are granted under the Swiss-Bulgarian Cooperation Program for buying equipment and preparing technological and investment plans.

Until the resources are depleted, anybody who matches the requirements can get up to 25% of the total investment.

Yotov, as cited by investor.bg, explains that the project of the "Bioselena"Foundation for Organic Agriculture will enable farmers to use the milk from the animals they are breeding to make dairy products like yoghurt, different types of cheese, etc of their own brand, which will be traded on the market.

Under Ordinance#26 of Bulgaria's Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MZH) on direct sales, livestock breeders have no right to offer their products in big chains of stores but they can sell them at their own farm, small shops, and municipal wholesale markets.

The project includes the Bulgarian municipalities of Troyan, Karlovo, Chiprovtsi, Berkovitsa, Georgi Damyanovo, Svoge and Godech.

Each farmer will be entitled to expert consultation by a specialist in dairy technology on developing and finalizing a product.

Appropriate packaging and labeling will also be developed.

Apart from that, 10 farmers will be trained at Swiss farms which process a portion of their production and are involved in direct sales, according to Tencho Hristov, zoo-engineer at Bioselena.

The project also envisages the establishment of farmers' markets in the cities of Troyan, Karlovo, Montana, and Sofia. Online sales of products will also be organized.

One project has already been approved under the scheme – a farmer from the village of Dalbok Dol in the Lovech district will receive support for launching his own brand of yoghurt.
