Fewer babies will be born 2013 in Bulgaria than in any year since the end of the World War II, doctors have alarmed.

The birth rate in Bulgaria this year will hit the lowest point since 1945 – about 60 000 babies - as unemployment is rising.

The relationship between the economy and fertility has long been discussed, but remains controversial.

Researchers however said their study proved that the extent of joblessness among people aged between 20 and 40 does in fact have huge effect on birth rates.
