The Mayor of Bulgaria's southwestern town of Simitli, Apostol Apostolov, announced Sunday that miners in the Oranovo coal mine make the lowest wages in the entire municipality.

According to him, the majority earn the meager BGN 300-400 a month.

Apostolov says he was fully aware the mine provides the "daily bread" for 262 people and their families, stressing he firmly opposes its closure as it would be impossible to find another 262 job openings in the area.

"I am the last person to request such closure. But we should take a look at the conditions there. I am not for closure; I am for ending deadly incidents. We lost 6 people in 6 years. The management of the mine should stop their humiliating attitude towards their workers. On the day of the latest tragedy, manager Valeri Manov stated he "was feeding these poor people for 8 years," said the Mayor.

Two miners died after a collapse at the mine on Tuesday. Two others remain trapped inside as the rescue effort continues for the 6th day in row and there is no sign it is getting close to an end.

Apostolov, however, gave high marks to the Socialist-endorsed government of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, explaining that no other cabinet had offered such support and empathy.
