Bulgaria: Bulgaria Has EU's 9th Highest Youth Unemployment

Bulgaria’s youth unemployment rate was 28.1% in 2012, or the ninth highest in the European Union, according to Eurostat.

Eurostat’s latest statistics show that more than 5.6 million people (23.0%) in the under-25 labour force are unemployed in the bloc. The youth unemployment ratio of 9.7% indicates that 1 out of 10 young people within the total population aged 15-24 years was unemployed.

Because not every young person is in the labour force, the youth unemployment rate does not indicate the share of all young people who are unemployed. Youth unemployment rates are frequently misinterpreted in this sense.

The youth unemployment rate in 2012 was highest in Greece in Spain - 55.3% and 53.2% respectively – and lowest in Germany – 8.1%.
