Bulgaria’s former European Commissioner has warned the country may find itself isolated from European Union's decision-making process due to lack of trust in the current political elite.
A day after the Ambassadors of Germany and France to Bulgaria, Matthias Hoepfner and Philippe Autie, issued a joint statement on the tense situation in the country, stressing that the voice of civil society must be heard and warning that the oligarchic model is incompatible with EU membership, Meglena Kuneva said this is Brussels’ last warning.
“After this statement, we can expect all 27 EU member states to put Bulgaria’s membership in deep freeze and keep it away from EU decision-making process. I sincerely hope Bulgaria won’t let this happen,” Kuneva said while on a visit to the Danube town of Russe.
In her words Bulgaria is running out of time and the unprecedented declaration of the ambassadors of the countries, which drive Europe, is clear a message by their governments.
"The statement makes clear the attitude of a government dominated by socialists, such as the government of France, and a government dominated by the European People’s Party, such as the German government," said Kuneva.
"Face reality, come to your senses. We trust more the people protesting in the streets, than the politicians in parliament. This is the message of the ambassadors’ statement,” Kuneva added.
She stressed that representatives of all EU member states are unanimous in their assessment of the latest events in Bulgaria.
The Ambassadors of Germany and France to Bulgaria issued their statement on the 25th day of anti-government protests in Bulgaria.
The series of anti-government rallies in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the cabinet resign collectively over ties with oligarchs.
Protesters are also calling for Election Code amendments which will guarantee greater representation of the people in Parliament.
