Chetin Kazak, MP of Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), has informed that the ad-hoc parliamentary committee tasked with drafting a new Election Code will not speed up work on the project despite the demands of protesters for immediate elections.

In a Wednesday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), he made clear that the deadline for the completion of the draft Election Code was the end of autumn.

Kazak explained that the ad-hoc committee was not going to discuss concrete provisions during its Wednesday sitting but was going to focus on the issue of introducing machine voting.

"We first need to reach agreement on the principles and see whether machine voting should be introduced. Once we have reached agreement, we shall sit down and write the texts, which will not be that difficult. The committee has set itself a deadline of 3 months by the end of autumn to finish the project for a new Election Code," he stated.

Calls for a new Election Code gained momentum as a result of a series of ongoing anti-government protests in Bulgaria.

Public discontent spiked in response to the scandalous appointment of media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

Although the appointment was reversed, Bulgarians went on to demand the resignation of the socialist-led government over ties with oligarchs, as well as a fundamental revision of the Election Code which will guarantee greater representation of the people in Parliament.
