Five members of center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) have issued a media statement saying that they are taking steps to terminate their party membership and to establish a new political project.

The declaration is signed by "members of the Executive Committee of GERB, MPs from the 41st and 42nd National Assembly, district and municipal coordinators of the party," including Ivan Petrov, Pavel Dimitrov, Nedyalko Nedyalkov, Konstantin Hadzhigaev, and Emil Dimitrov.

The declaration says that GERB has come to a point where it has nothing in common with the values it embodied at the time of its establishment.

The five members of GERB express discontent over the fact that Tsvetan Tsvetanov continues to be Deputy Chair of the party and pretends to be a paragon of integrity despite the fact that he has been indicted for serious crimes.

The disgruntled GERB members note that the party has become off-putting as a result of arrogance, inadequate behavior, rampant mediocrity and a democracy deficit.

According to reports of mediapool.bg, citing sources close to the matter, some ten MPs of GERB are expected to leave the party over the next one or two weeks.

It is unclear whether the renegades will show up in Parliament, contradicting GERB's policy of boycotting all parliament sittings.

According to a plausible scenario, the renegade MPs of GERB may support the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party to secure a quorum, thereby cutting the dependence of the two parties on nationalist party Ataka.
