According to a survey of the Mediana polling agency, despite the series of ongoing anti-government protests, over 60% of Bulgarians are not seeking new early elections now and they rather want the situation to return to normal.
The results of the survey requested by the private TV channel TV7 were presented Wednesday by pollster Kolyo Kolev during the "News 7" morning broadcast.
According to the poll, as cited by Sega daily, if the country organized immediate snap elections, they would result in 20% support for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), 18.6% support for center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), 7.4% support for the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and 2.5% support for nationalist party Ataka.
The parties closest to passing the 4% parliamentary threshold are the Bulgaria for Citizens Movement of former EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva (3.4%) and nationalist party National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB) (2.8%).
Right-wing parties are not gaining support, with the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) backed by 1.9% of the voters and the Union of Democratic Forces supported by 0.9% of the voters.
Kolev explained that a new snap elections would result in a repeat of the outcome of the May 12 vote.
The pollster was rather skeptical about the chances of Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev founding a new right-wing party, saying that he lacked the charisma necessary for a party leader.
Regarding the new leader of DSB, Radan Kanev, he said that the was unrecognizable to the mass audience and could hardly boost support for the right-wing party.
Despite the 20 days of ongoing protests against the socialist-led Cabinet, Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski remains in the top 3 of politicians with highest approval ratings, preceded only by President Plevneliev and Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.
Oresharski is closely followed by BSP leader Sergei Stanishev and GERB leader Boyko Borisov in the ranking.
The nationally representative poll was conducted in the period June 27 – July 1.
