Bulgaria’s embattled Socialist-backed government can do only one reasonable move – resign, pollsters claim.
“The government has no chance to fulfill their program given the tense situation in the country, the Parliament, the attempt to appoint Delyan Peevski for the Head of the National Security agency, and the apparent lack of freedom of the Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski to make his own political decisions,” Tsvetozar Tomov said in an interview for Nova TV channel on Wednesday.
Tomov voiced confidence that the resignation is a necessary move as it will decrease the tensions in the country.
“There are blunders after which the government in any democratic country is obliged to resign,” Tomov said.
According to his colleague Kolyo Kolev both sides are wrong.
"Some people want one thing, some people want another thing. I like the protesters very much. But they are not representative of the people; they are part of the society. True, many people were genuinely outraged with the appointment of Delyan Peevski and he left,” Kolev said.
“Some people say “We want elections,” others say “We don’t.” Hence the voters really need to decide whether they want elections or not. We need to hear the opinions of both sides and see which side is bigger,” Kolev added.
Should Bulgaria hold elections now, it is likely that the results will be similar to those received in May, the pollsters forecast.
"One of the misfortunes of our political life is the mixing of the political principles with the political expediency,” Tomov said.
“All the arguments that the government can pull in order not to resign are arguments related to political expediency. Indeed, the country does not need new elections; this will be a tough test.
But the resignation is a matter of political principles. After what happened, given the fact that a lot of Bulgarians are not represented in this Parliament and the violent confrontation in the National Assembly, in order to meet public sentiment, the government has to go,” Tomov said.
“The parties and the political leaders are puppets on the political scene in our political life. We do not know who took the decision for Peevski’s nomination."
“The experiment with this government has failed. Something new needs to be done. Nothing personal to Mr. Oresharski,” Tomov said.
Kolev added that Oresharski must declare what he plans to do.
"At the moment there is no dialogue, only monologue - we only hear" Resignation." I do not hear the offer from the other side, the offer Mr. Oresharsky has to these people to reduce the tension,” Kolev also said.
