The Socialists have a precise way to bring an end to the crisis, according to Sergey Stanishev, leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and the Party of European Socialists, PES.

The entire PES leadership is in Sofia Saturday, at a time Stanishev is facing growing discontent from his own country people and party.

The PES sitting is held at the National Palace of Culture, NDK, in downtown Sofia. It started at 10 am and is expected to close at 10 pm.

Bulgarian citizens are staging mass protest rallies for the 8th day in a row. They were sparked by the outrageous decision of the government and the Parliament to appoint controversial media mogul and lawmaker Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) with Stanishev seen as one of the masterminds behind the plan.

Speaking before the delegates, Stanishev stated the government of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, elected on the mandate of the Socialist Party, will prove daily they are working and fulfilling the delivered promises.

"We know our responsibility before our comrades from the European family; we have very important tasks in the 11 months ahead of the elections for European Parliament. Within the State budget frame we must defend our cause, carry out a dialogue, revive the industrial sector, and protect young people. We will not succumb to those who led Bulgarians to such despair to start setting themselves on fire in large numbers," said he, as a growing crowd of demonstrators is shouting outside NDK, demanding his resignation and the resignation of the Cabinet Oresharski.

Stanishev explained he was fully aware that the road ahead is difficult and filled with obstacles, but stressed only Socialists can change Europe for the better.

He thanked PES for their solidarity and support for BSP and the Cabinet Oresharski.

"Let me greet you in Sofia warmly. PES is coming here for the second time. The first time it was rainy and foggy; now it is sunny and hot. This is the political situation in Bulgaria – hot," Stanishev stated.

The Socialist leader explained people in Bulgaria have been protesting since February not only over high utility bills, but for democracy.

"In the last four years and now, our cause was and is economic reforms, socials justice and liberating State institutions from the negative influences accumulated during the rule of the previous Cabinet of the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, and Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and during the entire Transition Period after the fall of Communism in 1989.
