In May 2013, Sofia Airport serviced a total of 316 975 passengers, up by 1.8% on the year, according to statistics of the company.

The number of passengers who traveled to international destinations went up by 3% year on year, according to a media statement of Sofia Airport, as cited by dnevnik.bg.

The largest number of passengers were carried by easyJet (up by 57%), Bulgaria Air (up by 7%), and Turkish Airlines (up by 8%).

Airliners Wizz Air, Alitalia, Air Malta, El Al, and Aeroflot also registered increases in the number of passengers.

In May 2013, the number of passengers who flew on tourist charter flights went up by 8%.

In May 2013, the Bulgarian Air Charter company registered a threefold year-on-year increase in the number of Bulgarian passengers carried, reaching a total of 2900.

The upward trend was mostly due to the accumulation of days off in early May, the top destinations being Sicily's Palermo and the Greek islands of Santorini and Zakynthos.

In May 2013, international charter airliners registered an 18% year-on-year increase in the number of serviced passengers.

The number of passengers traveling to domestic destinations fell by 11% to 15 815.

The number of airplanes which departed and landed at Sofia Airport decreased by 9.5% to 3663, compared to 3934 in May 2012.

The largest decrease was registered in the number of flights to domestic destinations.

Meanwhile, the decrease in flights to international destinations was partially offset by the increased frequency of flights of Bulgaria Air and by the two new flights of easyJet from Sofia to London's Stanstead and Berlin's Schoenefeld.

In May 2013, the number of charter flights went up by 10%, while business flights increased by 5%.

Bulgaria Air, Turkish Airlines and Sunexpress will operate summer charter flights to Antalya, while two other Turkish airline companies - Pegasus and Onur Air, will transport Bulgarian tourists to Bodrum.

The total volume of processed cargo and postal shipments in May 2013 amounted to 1440 tonnes, at the same level as May 2012.

In the summer of 2013, Sofia Airport will resume direct flights to Budapest and Kiev, which were halted when the airlines operating the flights went bankrupt.

Starting end-June, Bulgaria will fly to Budapest four times a week, while Wizz Air will carry out flights to Kiev three times a week.

Spanish low-cost Vueling will set foot on the Bulgarian market with regular flights Barcelona – Sofia.
