The agenda of Sunday's meeting of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski and EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva included the EU's multi-annual financial framework and Bulgaria's place in it.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Bulgaria's EU Commissioner, as cited by the Focus news agency, assured Oresharski that he could rely on the support of European institutions in his work.

"We have known each other for over 30 years, we have been colleagues at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) for a long time, and I respect your professionalism, which you have proven repeatedly by solving difficult problems of Bulgaria in your capacity of Deputy Minister and Finance Minister," Georgieva added.

"We discussed the most important points on the agenda of the EC, which are also the most important issues on Bulgaria's agenda. We talked about the state of negotiations on the next EU budget, the risks they carry, and how Bulgaria can defend its interests, as well as concrete steps to speed up EU funds absorption during the current programming period and recommendations for conducting successful talks for the next period. Taking into account the floods in Central Europe, we also discussed the priorities in my field of work" the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response added.

"I would like to emphasize two things – the issues which are on the European agenda today – competitiveness, a favorable business environment, investments, restoring growth, backing the most socially underprivileged groups. These issues are also on Bulgaria's agenda. In this line of thought, this agenda is most important for Bulgarian citizens, but it is also essential for Europe," Georgieva stated, assuring Oresharski that he could count on the support of European institutions.

Oresharski, in turn, made clear that the meeting with Georgieva had lasted over an hour, adding that the EU Commissioner had shared good advice on boosting EU funds absorption and steps to prevent loss of EU funding.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister informed that he had exchanged views with Georgieva on issues related to the EU's multi-annual financial framework, as well as the agreement with EC on the next programming period.
