Bulgaria's new Interior Minister, Tsvetlin Yovchev, has issued an order Monday for the dismissal of the Director of the Sofia Police Directorate, Chief Commissar, Valeri Yordanov.
The directors of the regional police directorates in the cities of Targovishte, Montana, Kardzhali, and Vratsa, have been dismissed by Yovchev as well.
The Interior Ministry is yet to issue an official statement on the reshuffles, however, speaking Monday for the Bulgarian National Radio, Yovchev stated the regional police chiefs have been sacked for poor results in the fight against crime.
He further explained he has asked Yordanov's resignation over a case where Bulgarian media reported how police officers were hanging around, watching unperturbed, as some people were selling contraband cigarettes on the street, right before their eyes.
"This is totally unacceptable," said the new Minister.
