Bulgaria's police unit for fight with organized crime might be transferred to the State Agency for National Security, according to planned legislative amendments in Bulgaria's new parliament.
The bill has been tabled by MPs from the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
It sees the organized crime unit (GDBOP), which is currently under the Ministry of Interior, to be transferred to the National Security Agency (DANS).
According to the legislation, DANS's director will be appointed by Parliament, which will also have a special committee to monitor the agency's activities.
The Socialists have nominated former DANS director, Tsvetlin Yovchev for the position of Minister of Interior in a cabinet chaired by PM candidate Plamen Oresharski.
