An elderly pedestrian is in stable condition after being hit by the automobile of Bulgaria's Chief Secretary of the Interior, Kalin Georgiev.
The incident happened Wednesday afternoon in Sofia. Georgiev travelled on the very busy "Tsarigradsko Shose" boulevard in a government-issued Volkswagen with his driver behind the wheel when a pedestrian, around the age of 70, suddenly appeared before them. The driver immediately hit the brakes but was not able to avoid the collision.
The Interior Ministry's press office is reporting that the pedestrian has been at fault as crossing the boulevard is banned in full everywhere alongside the road. The driver has been traveling with 50 km/h in a section where the speed limit is 80 km/h.
Both Georgiev and the driver rendered first help on the spot in waiting for the ambulance. The DUI test of the driver has been negative.
An eyewitness has told the Bulgarian Trud (Labor) daily that 3 minutes after the incident several police cruisers have arrived at the scene of the accident, while the ambulance has taken 6 minutes.
The man is in the hospital in stable condition, the Interior reports.
According to unconfirmed information, he worked as private security guard and wanted to cross the boulevard in a hurry to buy some food.
