Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the country's southern Black Sea region on Friday to attend large-scale military drills aimed at testing the combat readiness of units in the area, which will host the Winter Olympic Games next year.

Putin ordered the snap drills on Thursday, as concerns persist over the combat readiness of the armed forces.

The exercise involves up to 7,000 military personnel and 36 warships joined by rapid deployment forces, as well as airborne and special task forces.

Russia moved to reform its military after the 2008 war with Georgia showed up weaknesses.
