The Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, has firmly rejected claims they have been providing political cover-up for former Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Naydenov.

It was revealed Tuesday that the Sofia City Prosecution has levied several charges of attempt to bribe and abuse of power against Naydenov, who served in the GERB Cabinet of former Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, 2009-2013.

In a special statement, issued by GERB's press office, the party declares they would not protect anyone in cases of suspected violations, regardless of the person's political affiliation.

"The same is valid for the charges pressed against Naydenov. We believe that the unbiased work of all law enforcement, investigative and judicial authorities is the only legitimate way to prove someone's innocence," the press release reads.

The statement, however, stresses Bulgaria is witnessing an unprecedented pressure exerted on various institutions by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, in an attempt to use them for election campaigning.

GERB conclude they were expecting an independent probe and call on BSP to show the same zealousness when it comes to their Ministers in the Three-Way Coalition Cabinet.

Naydenov also insists he has been framed by the Socialists.

Bulgaria is to hold early elections on May 12, following the February resignation of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov and the Cabinet of his GERB party.
