Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
The former Cabinet of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and his Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, have given away at least BGN 41 M in public tenders in the last days of their rule.
The data was reported by the Bulgarian Trud (Labor) daily, citing their own investigative report.
On February 25th, the prisons, which are under the authority of the Justice Ministry, have inked a contract for BGN 18 M, binding them to purchase diesel in the next three years only from the "Lego Trade" company. The prices will be the stock exchange ones, with no more than 25% gross margin, according to the Ministry.
It has explained the last-minute hefty deal with the fact the previous contract expires on April 1. This contract has been sealed without a public tender on grounds diesel is a stock exchange commodity.
It is used for heating and hot water in prisons.
Another contract, signed without a public tender, is the one for servicing the accounting software of the prisons on grounds the company in question has authored the software program and hiring a different one would violate copyright laws. The amount of this contract has not been disclosed.
An additional large sum, granted to the Justice Ministry, is BGN 1.1 M for repairs of the courthouse in the town of Petrich.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry has announced a public tender for BGN 7 M without Value Added Tax, VAT, for firefighters' equipment and another one for flight tickets for BGN 1.1 M, despite the fact the Ministry's leadership was outgoing at the time.
Also days before calling it quits, Defense Minister, Anyu Angelov, has launched a tender for army underwear for BGN 0.5 M and for shoes for BGN 600 000.
The Education Ministry has launched a bid in the amount of BGN 1.7 M for companies to organize seminars for managers of daycare centers.
Trud further writes that there are several other tenders, which would certainly "swallow" more millions, but there amounts have not been published.
On February 21, Bulgaria's Parliament approved the resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's GERB government amidst unprecedented since 1997 protest rallies against sky-high utility bills, monopolies, stagnation, corruption and wide-spread poverty, which later turned into a civil unrest and political demands.
Snap general election is to be held May 12, just two months ahead of the regular date in July.
President, Rosen Plevneliev, named the caretaker government on March 12.
