Anti-Flood Measures Taken in Bulgaria's Top Winter Resort

Society » ENVIRONMENT | March 16, 2013, Saturday // 18:09

Intensive snow melting in the Pirin Mountain might cause a doubling of water levels in the rivers passing through Bulgaria's nearby prime winter resort, Bansko.

Local authorities said that in the past 24 hours a significant increase has already been observed.

A similar situation is reported for the nearby town of Razlog, and extensive monitoring will be conducted in the next few days to prevent flooding.

Cleaning and reconstruction works of river beds in both Bansko and Razlog are underway.

In past years, the river Glazne has gone out of its bed during intensive snow melting, causing property damage in Bansko.

Critics have said that flooding has been rendered easier by improper development of Bansko as a resort, including erosion of ski slopes, overconstruction, and improper management of the river beds.
