Tanks Rescue People from Blizzard in Hungary

World | March 16, 2013, Saturday // 16:14

Military tanks were mobilized to help people trapped after massive snowfall blocked scores of vehicles on Hungary's roads.

T-72 battle tanks trundled along icy roads, while thousands of people waited in cars on the M1 motorway from Budapest to Vienna, writes the BBC.

Heavy snowfall and blizzards envelopped much of Central Europe starting Thursday.

In Hungary, snow drifts reaching 1 m were observed, with winds gusting at 100 km/h.

The unexpectedly high number of people trapped on the roads is hindering rescue operations.
