Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev has stated that the country's Interior Ministery cannot guarantee fair elections, since it is still controlled by the former center-right GERB government.

After his meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Marin Raykov on Friday, Stanishev expressed his fears that former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov is still effectively in charge of the Interior Ministry.

Raykov and Stanishev discussed the establishment of an "electoral board", a body that will aim to guarantee transparent and fair elections.

Stanishev said that he supported the electoral board idea, adding that it should include respected NGOs.

The center-right government of former PM Boyko Borisov resigned amid massive anti-poverty protests in February, prompting President Rosen Plevneliev to adjourn the Parliament, appoint a caretaker Cabinet and schedule snap elections for May 12.
