Two Bulgarian food producers have been fined after lab tests revealed that their "beef" products contain horsemeat, local food safety authorities announced Wednesday.

The companies in question are Boni, based in Karlovo, and Mes-Ko, based in Petrich.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency sent a total of 25 food samples to a German lab for horsemeat DNA testing. Four of the samples came back positive.

Food Safety Agency head Yordan Voynov has assured reporters that the contaminated products have been removed from retail chains.

It is yet to be established whether the two companies that received BGN 10 000 fines knowingly mislabeled their products.

A new batch of 25 food samples has been sent to Germany for testing.

The EU-wide horsemeat scandal erupted in January when horsemeat was found in some beef meals and burgers in the UK and Ireland.

Since then, supermarkets across Europe have had to withdraw affected prepared meals from their shelves.
