German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has stated that he wants his European Union counterparts to consider further measures against North Korea beyond UN sanctions.

Westerwelle told reporters that he and other EU Foreign Ministers would discuss possible financial, trade and other sanctions at their regular meeting in Brussels on Monday.

"We will discuss how we Europeans make our contribution to allowing the pressure on the regime not to abate," he said, as cited by international media.

The German Foreign Minister urged China to use its influence to put additional pressure on North Korea.

Pyongyang declared Friday that it is ending all non-aggression pacts with South Korea.

The announcement follows a new round of UN sanctions punishing Pyongyang for its nuclear test last month.

North Korea warned Thursday it could launch a preemptive nuclear strike against potential aggressors as the UN Security Council prepared to impose a new set of sanctions on the country.
