Varna Mayor, Kiril Yordanov, declared at an emergency briefing Monday he was not going to resign from the post.

The protest rallies of Bulgarians against the political model, unbearable utility bills and wide-spread poverty have been shaking the country for two weeks and are to continue Monday evening.

The largest-scale ones have been staged in the Black Sea city of Varna, where in addition to other demands, the demonstrators are calling for the resignation of their 4th-term Mayor, lastly elected on the ticked of the GERB party.

Yordanov grounded his refusal to resign on 70 000 Varna residents casting a ballot for him.

The two-week long protests led to the resignation of the GERB Cabinet of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, last Thursday.

Regarding earlier accusations of Yordanov's unexplainable wealth, coming from TV7 CEO and host Nikolay Barekov, who from being one of the strongest Borisov's supporters turned suddenly on the side of the demonstrators, Yordanov stated they were slander and threatened to sue the journalist.

The Mayor also announced he was expecting a team of medical experts to arrive in Varna to plan the best possible treatment for Plamen Goranov, the man who set himself on fire several days ago in sign of protest precisely against Yordanov.

The prosecution has launched a pre-trial proceeding in the case which is listed as "incitement to suicide."

The probe has not established any documented relations between Goranov and the City Hall. Yoradnov pledged to resign immediately if the investigation proves he has been responsible in any way for the tragic act.

He stated that he fully supported the just demands of protesting disgruntled Bulgarians.

Regarding circulating claims he has been serving the interests of the powerful local shady business group TIM, Yordanov said there were only 3 deals between the group and the City Hall, and he had not signed any of them. He failed to give an answer to a journalist's question asking who has been the exact individual or individuals logging the proposals for these deals with the City Hall.
