The resignation of Bulgaria's Deputy PM and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov on Monday is an attempt to use him as a scapegoat for the failures of the Borisov Cabinet, deems Ivan Kostov, Prime Minister of Bulgaria in 1997-2001 and leader of the rightist Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party.
According to Kostov Djankov's quitting is technically irrelevant to the current problems, including the issues with Bulgaria's power utilities which led some 100 000 Bulgarians to take to the streets on Sunday.
"This move means Borisov is panicking," Kostov commented Monday, while refusing to comment on whether Bulgaria's EU Funds Minister Tomislav Donchev, who has been tipped to succeed Djankov, is a good choice to serve as Finance Minister until the parliamentary elections in July.
"This change is not enough, we need a new government and new rules," he added.
In addition to the resignation of the Borisov government, Kostov and his Democrats for Strong Bulgaria have called for a complete reshuffle of Bulgaria's watchdog – including the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation DKEVR, the Competition Protection Commission, and the Consumer Protection Commission.
