Leaked classified documents are a closet full of skeletons that opens periodically when the political situation is suitable, according to Chief Prosecutor, Sotir Tsatsarov.

Tsatsarov commented in the aftermath of the publishing of new documents from the Buddha police file of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, by the independent site for investigative journalism Bivol.bg.

Tsatsarov stressed that this was his civil position, not the one of a prosecutor.

The lasts documents released by Bivol reveal that in the 90s, Borisov has been subject of a surveillance operation on the part of the anti-mafia police over his "priority criminal orientation."

Tsatsarov noted leaks have been systematically used in Bulgaria for many years now to discredit political or business opponents, and they could affect anyone in the country, not just Borisov.

"When the moment comes, they are thrown into public space. It does not matter if they are true or not, what matters is to use them to spin a wave of insinuations. It is sufficient to use old files with codenames," said he, noting other former socialist countries have overcome long ago this trend.

The Chief Prosecutor declined commenting if Borisov's so-called Buddha file, released by Bivol, contained classified information on grounds he needed time to examine all documents.

Tsatsarvo was, however, firm there were no reasons to start a prosecutor's probe in the case since he had not seen any evidence of committed crime.
