A recent study conducted in Bulgaria has shown once again that the country is trailing all EU Member States in the income level of the population.
According to data of the Confederation of Independent Syndicates in Bulgaria, KNSB, the country has the lowest minimum monthly wage, the lowest average wage while the 12% unemployment rate is above the European average.
KNSB measures cost of living every three months.
Its latest data shows that in December 2012, one Bulgarian needed BGN 565 a month to cover this cost, while only 18.5% of the population had the said amount available.
The sum is by BGN 3 higher, compared to September 2012.
Nearly half of all Bulgarian households – 45% have just BGN 290 per member per month, while more and more Bulgarians are at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
23% of Bulgarians or 1.5 million people fall below the poverty line of BGN 215 a month.
48% if the income is spent on food, mainly bread and meat.
In Sofia, the cost of living is significantly higher than in other cities and towns due to the highest prices of food and rent, but the employment rate is lower and the wages are higher.
