Bulgarian Prosecution Goes for Permanent Detention of Dogan's Failed Assassin

Crime | January 21, 2013, Monday // 09:03

Bulgaria's Prosecutor's Office will request the permanent detention of Oktay Enimehmedov, the 25-year-old man who attempted to assassinate the leader of ethnic Turkish party DPS (Movement for Rights and Freedoms) Ahmed Dogan at a party conference on Saturday.

The prosecution will file the request on Tuesday, before the end of the 72-hour period for Emimehmedov's initial detention.

"In my view, it's better for him to stay in custody," Bulgaria's Deputy Chief Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov commented Monday morning, apparently referring to the fact that Enimehmedov was viciously beaten by DPS activists right on the party conference floor after the gas pistol he pointed at Dogan's.

The Deputy Chief Prosecutor also said the beaters will most likely be charged and held accountable for their actions.

Ahmed Dogan, founder and leader of the DPS party ("Movement for Rights and Freedoms"), was the target of an attack right on the floor of a party conference on Saturday by 25-year-old Oktay Enimehmedov, also a Bulgarian citizen from ethnic Turkish origin. However, the gas pistol that Enimehmedov pointed at Dogan's head misfired.
