A Bulgarian district court has found Yordan Lechkov, football legend and former Mayor of Sliven, guilty on two counts and sentenced him to two years of jail time.

The rule was issued by the Regional Court in the southern city of Stara Zagora.

The first charge was for an unfavorable deal for the Sliven water cycle and damages in the amount of BGN 571 783, while the second is qualified as pressure on the Director of the Sliven Regional National Revenue Agency, NRA, office.

The verdict is to be served in a minimum security facility, but it can be appealed with the Appeals Court in the second largest city of Plovdiv within 15 days.

There are currently five different cases against him at different stages and two not-guilty verdicts.

Yordan Lechkov, currently also a Vice President of the Bulgarian Football Federation, was a key member of the historically best Bulgarian national football team, who went on to grab the fourth place at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA.

At the local elections in October, Lechkov, endorsed by the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, ran for a second term in office, but was defeated by Socialist Kolio Milev.
