Israel has given the green light for developers to go ahead with plans to build 1,500 settler homes in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

The 1,500 apartment units in the neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo received final approval from the Israeli Interior Ministry on Monday. This means construction can begin in the coming year.

The plan for the 1,500 settler homes was first announced in 2010 during a visit to Israel by US Vice President Joe Biden, causing a major diplomatic rift between the US and Israel.

The latest move may renew Israel's tensions with the Palestinians over the controversial project, international media say.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged last week to build at least 3,000 more settler homes on West Bank land in retaliation for the Palestinians winning the rank of a UN non-member state.
