The central heating system of the Bulgarian city of Pernik has turned out to have been badly damaged by the May 20, 2012, earthquake that shook Western Bulgaria.
Just as December has brought low winter temperatures to Bulgaria, the heating utility in Pernik has found that the heating is malfunctioning since the 5.8-6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit in the spring has misplaced some of the system's pipelines.
Thus, the subscribers of the heating utility in Pernik can hope to get no more than 16 degrees Celsius in their homes shortly before Christmas.
The company said Friday that its teams have taken up emergency shifts in order to fix the problems, which have occurred even though recently it staged annual inspections of the facilities, which left the city without hot water for a month.
