A new tram route will be built in the Bulgarian capital Sofia by 2014, connecting the Seminary with the Studentski Grad (College Town) district.

The news was announced Tuesday by Sofia Deputy Mayor for Transport, Lyubomir Hristov, after the municipal councilors voted to include the project in the annual investment program.

Early estimates show the construction will cost about BGN 20 M without Value Added Tax, VAT, which will be financed by the EU Operational Program Regional Development.

The tram route will start from the Seminary and will use in part the old tram track to College Town.

Sofia Chief Architect, Petar Dikov, has further proposed to change the routes of trams 1 and 7 to pass over the tunnel near the National Palace of Culture, where a new traffic line will be built.
