A suicide car bomb attack near a military post in the central Syria province of Hama has killed at least 50 soldiers and pro-regime fighters on Monday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"At least 50 government troops and loyalist militiamen were killed this morning in a car bomb explosion near a military post in the village of Ziyara" in Hama province, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman announced, as cited by international media.

The Observatory also said at least 20 rebel fighters were killed in an air strike in northwestern Syria on Monday.

"At least 20 rebels were killed when a warplane bombarded the town of Harem" in Idlib province, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since the attempt for an Aran Spring-type revolution there against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011.

The civil war in Syria has already claimed more than 35 000 lives, while hundreds of thousands of refugees have fled the country.
