South Korea stands behind the nomination of Bulgarian Irina Bokova for a second term as Secretary General of UNESCO, according to the country's Prime Minister, Kim Hwang-sik.
The news emerged during a meeting between the South Korean PM and Bulgarian President, Rosen Plevneliev, held in the frame of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM-9) summit, taking place Monday and Tuesday in Laos.
Hwang-sik, cited by the presidential press office, told Plevneliev that Bokova has been successful in leading UNESCO in difficult times and amidst spending cuts.
Plevneliev declared Bulgaria wants "pragmatic cooperation, based on results." He stressed his country is trying to become a logistic and innovation hub in the region, outlined its advantages such as geographic location and transport connections – airports and sea and river ports with other strong economies in the region like Turkey, and the provision of special preferences for investments in industrial zones and parks.
The South Korean PM also noted Bulgaria's location as opportunity to turn the country into a regional logistics center in Southeastern Europe, the 10% corporate tax – the lowest in the world, the good education system and scientific base that could be mutually beneficial for both countries.
Hwang-sik promised expending the cooperation in the areas of the electronic government and the building of high-tech centers.
Scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Vientiane, Laos, the biennial summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting will bring together Asian and European government leaders to discuss the economic situation as well as global and regional issues.
