Tsunami Alert after 7.7 Degree Earthquake Shakes W Canada

A very strong earthquake, with magnitude estimated at 7.7 degrees on the Richter scale, shook Canada's British Columbia province overnight.

There are currently no data for casualties and damages.

It was feared that large tidal waves will form as a result from the quake, with residents of Hawaii put on the alert.

The tsunami is expected to reach the Hawaii archipelago around 11 am EET, and residents of low lying areas have been advised evacuate.

The coastal areas of British Columbia and Alaska have also been alerted for the wave.

The earthquake's epicenter was 198 km south-west of the port city of Prince Rupert, in the area of the Queen Charlotte Islands, and at a depth of 10 km.
