Days after the Nobel Peace Prize this year went to the European Union, Turkey's economy minister has slammed the decision, calling the bloc "the most hypocritical union of all time".

"EU is the most hypocritical union of all time and the most hypocritical association in the world. And this hypocrite has had Turkey wait at its door for 50 years," Turkish Minister of Economy Zafer Caglayan fumed, speaking at the Elita Oil Factory's opening ceremony in the southern province of Adana.

"The Nobel Peace winner puts a quota on Turkish products and trucks and applies a visa regime to Turkish businessmen even though Turkey has signed the Customs Union deal with the union," Caglayan stressed.

"So, I refuse to recognize EU's Nobel Peace Prize as this union commits crimes against humanity and creates unfair competition in trade. If you give EU the prize for hypocrisy, then we will accept it."

Praise, gratitude and shock have followed the news that the Nobel Peace Prize this year goes to the European Union.

Critics have been quick to point out that the award is playing down the impact of the raging financial crisis, as well as the role of NATO for preserving the peace in Europe.

The last organization to be given the award outright was Medecins Sans Frontieres, which won in 1999.
