Bulgaria: GERB’s Borissov to Pursue Alliances with BSP, TISP, and Possible DPS
Boyko Borissov, leader of GERB, has outlined his strategy for forming a coalition government following the upcoming elections
For the first time since the current Cabinet of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, took office, nearly every other person has a negative opinion of its policies.
According to a poll on public opinions of the Alfa Research agency, conducted in September and released Tuesday, 45% of respondents disapprove of the government while the share of its supporters is down to 18%. Also for the first time, approval of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, is lower than the disapproval 32% and 37% respectively.
Sociologists from the agency comment that the "fall political season begins with a number of cracks in the recently solid facade of GERB," finding changes in public opinion on at least 5 topics.
Nine out of the twelve key policies of the government are interpreted as unsuccessful. 70% of those polled are unhappy with the economic, social, healthcare and income policies.
The approval ratings of all ministers are down as well, except the one of Regional Minister, Lilyana Pavlova, whose rating went up significantly.
The assessment of the business climate is also worsening with 67% believing GERB is imposing rules for doing business that give a chance only to those close to the power.
The crashing approval ratings lead to strong disappointment from politics and politicians, to decreased desire to vote and uncertainty about election choices with a shrinking of the firm electorate of all parties.
The poll has been conducted between September 20 and 28 among 1 021 Bulgarians over the age of 18 across the country through a direct interview conducted in their homes.
